Know about chin implant surgery in India: implant materials, procedure, fillers vs implants, recovery and risks.
A chin implant is a solid implant placed over the chin bone to increase its projection and improve the balance of the face in profile. It is also called chin augmentation or mentoplasty. It is one of several options for a small or receding chin, and the others include repositioning the chin bone (genioplasty) and fillers. This guide explains chin implant surgery in India: how it works, implant materials, how it compares with fillers, recovery, risks and cost factors. Chin implant surgery is performed by Dr. Mathew P C, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, at Newface, Chengannur, Kerala.

A chin implant is placed through a small incision, usually inside the mouth or under the chin, and sits on the chin bone. It adds projection and changes the profile. It does not move the bone, so it is not the right choice for every chin. Whether an implant or another option suits you is decided after an examination.
Common materials are silicone and porous polyethylene (often sold as Medpor). They come in different shapes and sizes. The surgeon chooses the material and size according to your anatomy, the projection planned and the surgeon’s experience with the material. Each material has its own advantages and limits, which your surgeon will explain.

| Chin implant | Fillers or fat grafting | Sliding genioplasty | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | Adds projection over the bone | Adds volume to the soft tissue | Moves the chin bone itself |
| How long it lasts | Long-lasting | Temporary, and needs repeating | Long-lasting |
| Surgery | Yes | No (injection) | Yes |
| Can it move the chin back or shorten it | No | No | Yes |
The choice depends on your anatomy and goals, and is made with your surgeon.
Adults in good general health with realistic expectations may consider it, for example if they have a small or weak-looking chin that is out of balance with the nose and jaw. A consultation is needed to confirm whether an implant suits you, or whether another option is better. In younger people, surgery is usually deferred until growth is complete.
The time taken depends on the technique and on whether other procedures, such as rhinoplasty, are done together.

Healing tips: keep your head raised when resting, follow the diet and mouth-care instructions, take only the medicines your surgeon advises, avoid knocks to the chin, avoid smoking, and attend all follow-up visits.
Contact your surgeon if you have increasing pain or swelling, fever, bleeding that does not stop, pus or a bad taste in the mouth, or an implant that feels like it has moved.
As with any surgery, risks include bleeding, infection, swelling, scarring, numbness or tingling of the lower lip and chin, asymmetry, a result that does not match your expectations, shifting of the implant, bone changes under the implant over time, and the need to remove or replace the implant. Your surgeon should explain these risks before surgery. Results are not guaranteed and vary from person to person.
Implants made of silicone or porous polyethylene are designed to be long-lasting and can stay in place indefinitely, but they can be removed or replaced if there is a problem or you want a change. Natural ageing continues around the implant. Fillers, in contrast, are temporary.
The cost depends on the implant material and size, the technique, whether other procedures are combined, the surgeon’s fees, the hospital, anaesthesia, imaging and follow-up. A cost estimate can be given only after you are examined.
Surgery is done under anaesthesia. Afterwards there is usually mild to moderate discomfort, swelling and tightness, managed with prescribed medicines.
Swelling and bruising are usual in the first one to two weeks, and many people return to light routine activities in that time. Swelling can take months to settle fully.
They are long-lasting and can stay in place indefinitely, but they can be removed or replaced.
Some change is seen early, but swelling hides the final shape. It becomes clearer over about two to three months or longer.
The incision is usually inside the mouth, so there is no scar on the outside. If a cut under the chin is used, a small scar may be visible.
They suit different needs. An implant is long-lasting, while fillers are temporary and need repeating. Your surgeon can advise.
Yes, for example with rhinoplasty or jaw procedures, if the surgeon advises it after planning.
The cost depends on the implant, the technique, hospital charges and follow-up. It can be estimated after a consultation.
